Despite of various dal available in Indian markets, nothing can beat the simplicity of dal takda or you can say dal fry.
Dal tadka is made with yellow moong dal. Dal is boiled and to sum up fried spices and herbs and teaspoons full of ghee or clarified butter to give it awesome and delicious taste. It is usually served in restaurants or dhabas.
As very light on stomach, it is very easy to digest. Another way of making dal tadka is by cooking it in onion tomato takda which I will sharing very soon. Untill then enjoy this recipe. 🙂
- Moong Daal / Yellow daal – 1 cup
- Water – 4 to 5 cups
- Salt to taste
- Turmeric powder / Haldi – ¼ tsp
- Cumin seeds / Jeera – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder / Dhaniya powder – 1 tsp
- Red chili / Lal mirch powder – 1 or 2
- Asafoetida / hing – a pinch
- Cooking oil or desi ghee – 2 tbsp
- Wash daal in running water until you see clear water over it and soak it for around 15 to 20 minutes in water.
- In a pan add water and bring it to boil.
- Add soaked dal to the boiling water and mix well.
- Within few minutes white foam will form over the surface of water. Keep on removing it.
- Add salt and turmeric powder to the dal and mix well.
- Cover the pan with a lid and let it boil on medium flame till daal gets completely dissolved in water.
- Remove dal from gas once it is completely dissolved in water.
- Now, heat oil in a pan to prepare tadka for daal.
- Medium the flame and add cumin seeds to splutter. Add coriander powder.
- Turn off the gas and add red chili, hing and mix well.
- Immediately pour tadka over hot boiled daal. Do not mix tadka with dal.
- Serve daal tadka with rice or roti accompanied by salad.
Dal Fry Recipe – How to make Yellow Moong Dal at home:

6. Cover the pan with a lid and let it boil on medium flame till daal gets completely dissolved in water. Remove from gas.

7. To prepare tadka for daal, heat oil in another pan. Medium the flame and add cumin seeds to splutter.

8. Add coriander powder.
Â
9. Turn off the gas and add red chili, hing and mix well. Gas needs to be turned off so as to avoid burning of spices.

10. Immediately pour tadka over hot boiled daal. No need to mix it.

11. Let it settle.

12. Serve daal tadka with rice or roti accompanied by salad. –
